B.Sc.(Est.Man.), FRICS CEDR Accredited Mediator
Listening, empathy, challenge and facilitator are some of the words used by others to describe the skills applied to assist the parties in negotiating a settlement. Whatever the client designation from: public sector, corporate, high net worth individual, charity, small business, or a pro bono support case: the service is the same, giving unequivocal care and focus to finding a solution, whether by legal definition, or innovative and ‘outside the box’, that allows the client to ‘get on with the rest of my life’. Value for money is an essential criteria and methods of mediation can be by meeting, telephone, or video conferencing are used to ensure that the cost of mediation is proportionate to the matter in dispute.
Kevan has over 40 years experience as a chartered surveyor dealing in disputes, whether advising a client to negotiate a settlement, acting as an expert witness, an independent expert, arbitrator, or for nearly 20 years as a mediator. He has gained experience from a chartered surveyor, to head of professional services, senior partner, chairman of a multi-million pound turnover special needs charity in education and care, in all cases managing large numbers of people. His experience is being put to use as spokesperson on policy matters for the RICS, North East Region.
Kevan’s entrepreneurial experience includes the sale of a partnership to the financial services sector, the management buy-out of a professional service firm; the expansion of a business nationally; the setting up of a new professional services firm; the merger and management change of two charities with a combined turnover of £3.5 million and in four years growing the turnover to £19 million with outstanding Ofsted and Beacon Status results; chairing a City Centre Chaplaincy; being co-founder of the Northeast Institute of Business Ethics; providing a mentor service to start-up and emerging businesses; and advising government, regional government and local government on economic regeneration, investment, physical development and marketing.
Kevan has a commercial aptitude with a people focus: identifying need over position; resolution over principle. A clear understanding of the position of each party, in terms of business, ambition and desired outcome to guide and encourage toward a solution.
Kevan travels the UK to resolve disputes from his north east base, and is enthusiastic in seeking challenges and finding solutions that will help the parties get to the answer – ‘Yes’. As chairman of Northern Dispute Resolution he wishes to encourage the use of mediation and encourage and train mediators to develop their skill.
Kevan is a member of the RICS panels for: Mediation;Planning & Environmental; and Neighbourhood Plans Independent Examiner.
